Four Papillon Paintings . . . Two more paintings are below here.

In August 2007 my papillon Abby went with me on the Nemaha County Garden Tour, where I took a photos of her on a step. One of Abby's ears is less erect, since it got hurt when she was a pup, before she came into my life in 2002. Papillons are a friendly, gentle toy breed. In Belgium, papillons (which means butterflies in French) were called Squirrel Spaniels, perhaps since they chased squirrels from brush piles for hunters. Another source for the name may have been the comparison of the papillon tail as curling over its back like a squirrel tail.

Friends, Old & New (Dolls & Bears), the 2008 oil painting below, was painted from my own reference photo taken in June 2004 in my studio. Inspiration: I found the Americana colors appealing: red, golden brown, dark blue. The bears, apple, wood blocks and enamelware bowl gave me nostalgic feelings. When I was young, my sister and I often played on a swing of similar design to this one, in our woodland backyard. The swing became a sailing ship one day, a picnic place the next. Special thanks to our town antique shop for loaning me the vintage wood doll swing. The yarn ball was a long crocheted chain made by my son during grade school.
