Prologue: Easter Holidays 2009 . . .
Esme and Ashley had gone to a beach near Penzance one early March day to make sandcastles and to play, when something quite momentous happened at their home. The sea was calm at this sheltered cove in the curve of Mount's Bay, so it was safe for them to be left there by themselves for a while. They were accustomed to amuse themselves unsupervised and were happy without grown-ups organizing their every move.

They were to be joined today by two new "sisters"
Demelza Louise and Chloe. Their Guardian had undertaken to care for this pair while their parents pursued a dream of traveling to remote and exotic destinations. They preferred this sort of life to working in an office (Dad) or keeping house (Mum). But Demelza and Chloe must be educated and lead a more conventional life. They had come to live, therefore, in what is universally recognized as one of the most beautiful places on earth.
Cornwall! The far west of Cornwall! Penzance!

Demelza and Chloe had walked to the beach close to Morrab Gardens, which backed onto the house where they would be living. Now, as the parents prepared to say their goodbyes. Chloe had found a shell and had not a clue of what was happening. For her this was just the start of a lovely long holiday by the sea.

Jen's stories are (obviously!) works of fiction. Her setting is truly Cornwall. Most of the places referred to exist as described. The characters and incidents, however, are created solely from the author's imagination. Any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, is coincidental.
