About Skipper, a repainted, rewigged doll . . .

This DOLL: In 1964 Mattel created Skipper to become a younger sister to Barbie, five years after Barbie's debut. Until Skipper's retirement in 2003, she had many face and body sculpts. Her face was usually soft vinyl, while her body was hard vinyl.

This Skipper doll was the straight-leg original doll who was meant to be about ten years old. She had been well-played-with when Marsha at Hankie Couture sent her to me for a restoration. Skipper now has a new Natalie (size four) wig in golden-strawberry, synthetic mohair, made by Monique Trading Company.

If you would like to read more about Skipper, I trust the information on about.com written by Denise Van Patten, the website doll expert.

Skipper arrived with the following letter in her box:
Dear new mommy Nancy,
Hi! My name is Mush and I need help! My hair is a mess; my face is plain, and I have no friends. Will you, can you, work a miracle for me? Thank you!      ~ Mush

Skipper carried a letter with her back to her home in California:
March 26, 2009
Dear Mommy Couture,
My godmother in Nebraska was nice, but how I missed you! Since you had told Nancy that I lack friends, in the evenings she read to me from your new book Hankie Couture Handcrafted Fashions from Vintage Handkerchiefs. (See book cover above.) It had lots of tips about friendship and life.
I hope for a new name soon. Nancy said to remind you that my face has squishy plastic that has softened with age. If my face is squeezed, she cannot guarantee that paint won’t pop off. What kind of artist is she? Plus, she put this little pumice/acrylic layer on my face to hold the paint tighter. Which made my skin a bit rough. And then she put this moleskin (which the label said is meant for FEET) on my HEAD under my wig! I wanted to complain, but your book had all those reminders about politeness.
I am so glad to be coming home to you, my own dear mommy.
Love and kisses,      ~ your Mush
P.S. from Nancy:      It is true that I put moleskin on Skipper's head, to keep her wig snug without gluing it.      Sorry Skipper!

After removing all factory paint, I am using artist-grade alkyd-oil paints (in thin translucent glazes) with the addition of alkyd resin to make the paint surface become as flexible as the doll’s vinyl skin and to make it adhere well. I finely sand (Q-tip and finest pumice) the surface before painting it for better adhesion.

COLORS: Some computer screens may modify the color of the art. Some may make the image lighter or darker than it is. The doll has finer detail and more subtle coloring than a computer-jpeg-photo can show.
