Friendship at the Feis, a day of Irish Dance and Crafts
Milly and Cadence are going to a Feis. Since she moved up to Intermediate grade, Cadence now wears her first solo dress, a Celtic pattern in her favorite color of spruce green, with silver sparkles on the bodice. The name Cadence (rhythmic flow of sounds) suits her, since she has been fond of music and dancing since childhood. Her ginger-gold hair glistens in morning sun.
A Feis (pronounced fesh) or Feile, meaning festival, is a competition and a public performance of Irish dances, which often includes Irish crafts and traditional foods like soda bread. When a dancer becomes "advanced," a solo dress is designed for her, one dress that accents her own colors and includes Celtic symbols. Celtic knots appear in a book that is regarded as Ireland's national treasure. The Book of Kells, an illuminated manuscript in vibrant colours, was created by Celtic monks in about 800, 1200 years ago. In it, intricate designs interlace with the Latin text of the Christian gospels. Long kept at the Abbey of Kells, it was moved to Dublin for safekeeping in 1654.
As you may remember, Irish stepdance became famous after 1994 because of the touring shows Riverdance and again later by Lord of the Dance. Michael Ryan Flatley, an Irish American born in 1958, created the latter show. The solo stepdance usually has straight arms, and quick, precise movements of the feet. Girls dance in hard shoes or in soft shoes, called ghillies (gillies), which resemble black ballet shoes. Just for fun, you may like to know that Flatley set a Guinness Book world record for tapping speed in 1998, by achieving 35 taps per SECOND, though the record has now been surpassed by Michael Donnellan, at 40 taps per second (information from Wikipedia 2009).
Milly and Cadence have been best friends since early school days. Milly has been anticipating Cadence's performance. The September day has been balmy, warm enough for Milly to wear her summer dress, the one her mother sewed in May. Its tiny teal flowers remind her of a meadow and of playful summer days. The cotton is soft on her skin, even the petticoat is comfy, made of vintage fabric that brushes her legs gently. Milly protests against wearing any fabric that is stiff or coarse, any that makes her itch. She is feeling grown up today, since her mum let her wear eye shadow for the event, powder blue to enhance her amber-toffee eyes. Her hair braids, the hues of a sandy dune, are accented with teal and golden beads.
Milly's mother takes the girls into the garden for photographs before the dance. Sea oats mix with sedum and arbor vitae, all awaiting autumn. The sea oats bobble in the breeze, as if nodding, as the scent of sea water drifts in the air. Most of the sea oats have passed from green to bronze glitter and colors of smokey leather. The sedum flowers, where butterflies flocked only a week ago, have now turned crisp, the color of crimson wine cordial and old roses.

Cadence's mum is almost ready to roll up her daughter's hair in the dreaded heated wands, to make ringlets.
"Molly is lucky," Cadence complains. "Her mum just makes Molly a ponytail and then pins a curly wig to it."
"Poor you," Mum says. "Now remember," Mum adds, "Stand up until you dance. It took lots of work to press your dress! Sitting makes wrinkles." Cadence sighs.
|
Since Cadence looks pensive and nervous, Milly soothes her. Milly, as the helper, holds a cloth bag of safety pins, sewing-repair kit, camera, pen, notebook, and dance shoes.
|
|
Cadence's hair is finally finished. Milly helps Cadence find the correct stage hall for her dance and helps her lace up the special dancing shoes, called ghillies. She reminds Cadence to warm up her leg muscles before dancing. Cadence will perform dances of the Reel, Slip Jig and Hop Jig. "Remember to smile," Milly says. "I'll sit in front and cheer just for you!" Milly checks her pocket for the entrance money.
"Where is my friend Molly?" Cadence asks suddenly. "Have you seen her? She is going to dance the two-hand with me, after the Solo competitions. Will you find her for me?" In two-hand dances, two girls link arms and dance the same steps.

A famous Irish soprano will sing after the dances. Milly carries her little sister Mia into the lobby, in hopes of receiving an autograph from the fine lady, Philomena O'Shea.
 |
She waits, as Mia gets some much needed rest.
Is that her? Oh, it must be! How graceful and grand she is!
 |
Philomena O'Shea appears in all her glory!

An autograph to treasure!

Later on, Milly spots Philomena in the garden. Milly has her mild courage up now, since the famous singer has been kind and friendly. One more autograph, please, asks Milly, for my friend Liesel.
 |
Philomena smiles and shows Liesel how the color has flamed on the Euonymus leaves.
What a lovely autumn day!

My Feis story is a work of fiction, copyrighted by Nancy Lee Moran in autumn 2009. The characters and incidents are created from my imagination, after doing some research. Some insights came from my five years of helping with dance lessons in my town. Any resemblance to real persons, living or dead, is coincidental. ~ Nancy Lee Moran

My Irish Girls, October 2009
Each doll has brand new undies and ALL her original Kish clothing.
PHOTOS: Nancy Lee took all photos in natural daylight coming in her studio window.
JOINTS: Kish Seasons and Riley dolls have five joints in a strung vinyl body.
Philomena (the Irish singer) was my first time to repaint Ellowyne Wilde.
Ellowyne Wilde ~ I Wait Alone ~ by Robert Tonner has 12-points of articulation. A 16-inch (40 cm) fashion doll made of vinyl and hard plastic, Ellowyne has rooted saran hair. She had her doll debut in 2006, a large head on a teen body. She is known for her poetry and her somber moods, a fusion of anime and Goth influences. One of her poems reflects her angst: My eyes are lustrous, large and deep. Chopin always makes me weep.
Nancy's Note: The Random House Dictionary 2009 defines anime as: a Japanese style of motion-picture animation, one with highly stylized art, futuristic settings, and adult themes.
COLOR & PAINTING: Some computer screens may modify the color of the art. Some may make the image lighter or darker than it is. The doll has finer detail and more subtle coloring than a computer-jpeg-photo can show.
I am using artist-grade alkyd-oil paints (in thin translucent glazes) with the addition of alkyd resin to make the paint surface become as flexible as the doll’s vinyl skin and to make it adhere well. I finely sand (Q-tip and finest pumice) the surface before painting it for better adhesion.
BOX, Certificate, Doll Company:
Each doll has her certificate and box. I hope you won't store your dolls in the original cardboard boxes. Cardboard is an inexpensive paper product that is acidic. If you do store your dolls in original boxes, wrap each doll first in a clean white cotton pillowcase to protect it. Seasons Dolls were designed by Helen Kish and produced by White Balloon International Doll Company of Valencia in Spain. They were distributed in the USA by Paradise Galleries. These Seasons dolls were produced in 2003 (date on certificate) and are RETIRED.
KISH MARKS: There is an impressed mark on the back of her head near the neck: 1997 Kish and Company 97F, which shows when Helen Kish first created the head sculpt. I signed my name there, too.
FINISH:
Resin-oil glow (gloss) on eyes and satin gloss on lips
A thin veil of clear matte (non-shiny) varnish on rest of her face.
The Kish Seasons (Cadence and Milly) dresses will also fit the following 16” Kish girls:
Amalia & Tia (Ballerinas) Alice (in Wonderland) Daphne Emma Jo Kathy Naomi Rachel Snow White
The four 1996 “Sunday Best” girls: MacKenzie Margot Meredith Molly
Two of the 1997 “Famous Painters” series: Rose Sara

Nancy Lee Moran's POLICY TO SHOW RESPECT for HELEN KISH & other doll creators is as follows:
The dolls I use were factory painted. I would never repaint a doll that the artist (Helen Kish) had painted herself, such as some of those in the Kish Signature Line. I would not paint one in a limited edition of fewer than 300 (preferably 500 or more). I consult the beautiful book I own: Helen Kish: The Artist and Her Dolls by Louise Fecher (hardcover published in 2006). I am NOT affiliated with any doll company, creator or manufacturer.
