I, Nancy Lee, am especially fond of this watercolor, since I painted it by bringing one flower at a time into my studio, as each one bloomed. I painted each from life, that is, without photography. Each flower grew near my home, giving off its own sweet fragrance, perfume warmed by the sun. The art reflects my response to the beauty of nature.
To paint from life, without photos, has benefits for the artist, since the human eye sees differently than a camera does - in its perception of edges, colors, and values (light and dark). For an artist, painting from life is a bit like a pianist practicing piano scales and exercises.
