When friends gave me a gingerbread cottage one Christmas, it reminded me of being in first grade, when my mother made a gingerbread house for my class.
I painted four versions of the cottage during 2006 for my own collection. This one has a homey look with warm Americana heritage colors. It has an old spice container, a cinnamon stick, a child's rolling pin, flour fingerprints and bittersweet berries. Bittersweet is a vine that climbs woodland trees and bears clusters of bright orange pods.
I hope it brings happy memories to you. Some viewers said it evoked memories of baking during the holidays, of being at Grandma's house, and of looking in shops along Old Main Street.
