"A Moment in Time"

This painting was featured in the magazine Nebraska Life September 2001 issue, in an article written by Lisa Papenhausen on pages 62-66 about Moran.

In this 2000 pastel commission of brother and sister John and Jessie, Jessie's grandmother sewed her lovely dress. I took reference photos of the children in their own yard, knowing that the patron wished for me to include the hills of southeastern Nebraska near the Missouri River in the background. I suggested peonies for the foreground, finding beautiful ones to paint in my own town, then added the peony color in a bow on Jessie's dress. I wrote to the patrons when delivering their art: Peonies are fleeting, like childhood . . . beautiful flowers, beautiful children, in the Nebraska landscape that has become home to me, and to your family. Lewis Art Gallery framed the portrait.
