In an Omaha woodland park, I took photos in January 2004 on a day so bitterly cold that Patrick, his mother, and I gained insight into how cold the Billy Yank (Johnny Blue) soldiers must have been. We warmed up in the car in between each of four films, discussing ideas for the next film. An intermittent wind chilled us, but enlivened the flag. Patrick had agreed to research the number of stars to include on the flag for the art. In the end, he decided to have fifty stars to tie his art to the present time reenactments.I painted a small tintype image of his ancestor, who had fought in the Civil War with the 20th regiment of Chamberlain’s Maine division, James Jefferson Patterson. I included Patrick's mucket (mess kit), a trumpet passed down in his family, a pistol and rifle. I suggested the collage idea so that I could show a story of his reenactment adventures.
A couple of years before this painting, I had painted Patrick's sister Megan with her favorite hobby.
