“Whispering Daydreams”

For three months in 2013 I was patiently drawing with colored pencils.

In honor of my first grandchild, I made a design for children (and for the young at heart).

People (including me!) like the joyful spirit of Rose (bbflockling) Lacefield’s dolls and her stories that go with them. To my delight, Rose granted me permission to draw from her photos of her petite creations. I added whimsical touches to match the mood of her dolls, decorations of flowers, scrolls, magic stones and mushrooms.

In April 2016, heirloom-seamstress Janice Ferguson used my fabric to sew a summer dress (above here) for her granddaughter Vivian Rose, who was then age three. Read all about it at her fun blog link!

Janice chose a pattern from the Petite Poche by Wendy Schoen series, Violettes Bleues. The sweet, easy pattern (no buttons!) makes an adorable play dress and panties, for sizes 6 months to 3 years. Janice used spaghetti bias in the perfect-blue to outline the scallops of the hem.

She used two of my designs, printed on a fabric base of “Cotton Lawn Ultra.”

I picture the blue-toile design for fabric, as bedding and curtains for a child’s room, as a nursery toile.

After I have the drawing scanned, I shall add bright color to it with watercolor paints. Then it will be pretty for bedding with small framed pictures of each doll vignette as wall decor. It might become bright gift wrapping and greeting cards (with a special border around each character vignette). It is even a fun (and complex) puzzle in my Pixels shop.

What is Toile de Jouy?

Toile de Jouy is a design that has a white background on which a repeated pattern reveals a pastoral nature scene or flower theme in a single color. It has been a form of decorative storytelling for hundreds of years, since about 1760. Toile fabrics often grace curtains, furniture, bedding, chintz. Toile wallpaper is lovely, too. It is popular for aprons at country-themed garden parties and tea parties.
